Dear Writer-Friends,

I've been self-publishing since 2011, and I've shared the knowledge I've gained in two books: the Indie Author Survival Guide, Second Edition, and For Love or Money. I'm not an indie rockstar or a breakout success: I'm one of thousands of solidly midlist indie authors making a living with their works. These books are my way of helping my fellow authors discover the freedom of indie publishing. Write on, writer-friends!

Random Act of Kindness BLITZ! (paging Adam Heine)

This is probably going to embarrass Adam Heine, but I'm doing it anyway. (I hope you can forgive me, Adam.)

In celebration of The Bookshelf Muse's launch of their new The Emotion Thesaurus, I'm participating in their Random Act of Kindness BLITZ.

Adam and I live on opposite sides of the world.
We've never met in real life and probably never will.

Adam is one of those people who I am lucky to call my friend, who reads my manuscripts when they're a mess, who helps me puzzle out my bumbling attempts at slang, and who is a constant companion on the journey, sharing the successes and thinking through the craziness. But that isn't why I selected him for my Random Act. I chose Adam because he inspires me - a gift of being that is hard to measure - by who he is and what he chooses to do with his life.

You see, Adam doesn't just write amazing fiction (his YA novel Air Pirates is currently on submission). He's in Thailand because he and his wife Cindy foster kids (latest count: TEN! And you think your days are tough) - kids who have nothing, who have been abused or neglected or tossed aside. Adam and Cindy bring these children into their home and love them, providing the family they need to grow into healthy and strong and productive adults. That's enough right there to win my admiration. But enough is nowhere good enough for Adam, another thing about him that inspires me.

Adam is agented (I was ridiculously happy for him when he landed his agent last fall) and pursuing traditional publication because that is his dream. I may or may not be an indie revolutionary, but I have a deep respect for anyone pursuing their dreams. And pursuing isn't precisely the right word for Adam's quest: his pursuit is relentless, smart, targeted, wildly talented, and did I mention relentless? (And he has the charts to prove it). He's doing it because it's his dream and he wants to try the game on the hardest level. He believes that challenge is its own reward - another thing that inspires me.

Every day, somehow, with 10 children in the house, he writes and revises and takes time to answer my ridiculous emails. That level of dedication to the craft, to the quest for the dream, is a bit breathtaking in its inspirational level.

I happen to know that Adam is a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and that the reincarnation of that series, The Legend of Korra, is not available in Thailand. Because Adam is no Will Turner, he refuses to pirate this show. My RANDOM ACT is to gift Adam with a TV pass on Amazon Instant Video, so he can enjoy this rocking new series, even though it doesn't air in the country where he fulfills his labors of love (fostering and writing). It's a small thing that I hope he can share with his kids and will inspire his writing the way that he has inspired me.

(This is possibly a selfish gift as well, as I cannot wait to talk Legend of Korra with him.)

You can follow Adam on twitter or on his blog. He's one to watch. :)

  1. This is actually a gift to me too, FYI, because just like you, I've been dying to talk to Adam about Korra/Pro-bending/Ahman and all of it! Thanks, Susan!

    1. BONUS! I'm just hoping it works... Thailand has a way of making these things difficult. (If not, I have a backup plan, but it doesn't involve Korra.)

    1. If Air Pirates doesn't sell, I might have to form a publishing company just to make sure people get a chance to read it. I'm only sorta kidding about that, too. Thanks for stopping by!
