Dear Writer-Friends,

I've been self-publishing since 2011, and I've shared the knowledge I've gained in two books: the Indie Author Survival Guide, Second Edition, and For Love or Money. I'm not an indie rockstar or a breakout success: I'm one of thousands of solidly midlist indie authors making a living with their works. These books are my way of helping my fellow authors discover the freedom of indie publishing. Write on, writer-friends!

Open Minds on Sale

$2.99 on sale for $0.99

I'm running an ad [now live] with the absolutely delightful folks at Kindle Fire Department - seriously, the lady who runs their customer service is named Gadget and looks like this:
How can you not love her?

Since I'm running an ad (for Open Minds, but also Closed Hearts), I'm temporarily dropping the price of Open Minds to 99cents. So, if you haven't scooped up your copy, today's the day to do it!

A note on ads: I warn indie authors all the time to be very careful about where they spend their advertisement dollars - partly because I'm stingy, but mostly because anyone can throw out a shingle and claim to reach readers for a price. The question is: can they deliver an audience that would be interested in  your book? My experience has been an enthusiastic YES for only two online advertisers: Kindle Fire Department and Pixel of Ink (who now only accepts listings of free books). My last ads with both (back in February) netted me a significant surge in readership. I complimented Gadget at the time, saying that KFD reminded me of a mini-POI (the industry leader in delivering readership). She wryly noted that they didn't intend to be a mini-anything for long. Just the kind of spunk and determination I like! And that leads to success.

Kindle Fire Department has only grown since February, and I'm hoping for a successful ad with them. (And I would love your help in tweeting out the sale, if you're so inclined.)

Tomorrow: Critique Wednesday! Where I'll be talking about how analyzing novels is like being in the Blind Men and the Elephant story and giving away another 5 page critique!

  1. FYI - I can't find your add anywhere on that blog, but I went ahead and bought Open Minds. I've been waiting and waiting to get around to it, and even though I've got a few books I have to read first, I figure it's a good time to support you, with it being on sale. :)

    1. Matt - Yeah, the ad won't go live until later today, and I should have had a direct link to the book. Thanks! And thank you for getting the book!! I hope you enjoy it. (p.s. I'm working on that chapter today/tomorrow - just did some research for another chapter that impacts it ... :))

    1. Nickie - I wish POI would sell ads like they used to, but now they only do free books - i.e. your book has to be free, then they advertise it for free (sometimes, if they pick you). It's an amazing boon if you get picked up, but you can't "buy" the ad anymore. Just FYI! Good luck!

Just noticed Matt's comment. I'll go check it out now.

    1. Thanks for stopping by! I've updated the post, so that people won't go looking for the ad - just the book! :)

  4. And ... the ad is now live! :) You can see what a nice job the KFD people do with their ad copy.
